Day 1 (D): Melbourne to Mildura

This morning we head up the Calder Hwy towards Bendigo with a stopover for lunch (own expense) at Swan Hill. We shall check into our motel in Wentworth before our dinner (own expense) at Coomealla Club.

This morning we head into Mildura with our first stop is the Rio Vista, the 1891 home of the city’s founder, WB Chaffey. We then visit Mildura Arts Centre and Historical Museum, 19th Century home featuring antique filled rooms of the 1890s’ beautifully restored woodwork, exquisite hand painted stained glass windows and door panelling.

We then visit the Big Orange World for a train tour with guided commentary through orchard and avocado canopy, lookout tower, nursery talk, orange tastings, and a free cup of freshly squeezed juice. See 30 different citrus and avocado varieties. Learn how to grow and care for them at home. Learn how to select good fruit in the market. Fun for all ages.

We now head back to the Mildura RSL for lunch (own expense) and free time this afternoon to spend in the Club before cruising on the Murray on PS Melbourne, Australia’s most famous paddle steamer, retaining her original engine and boiler and still fired in the old way with wood.

(Note: two-hour PS Melbourne cruise is at own expense) or if you prefer we could tour around the area and places of interest.

After breakfast, we visit Woodsiest Gem Shop, Australia’s largest gemstone cutting and jewellery manufacturing complex. From here we travel back to Melbourne to complete a fantastic break away!
