Located on the banks of the Murray River, the historic Port of Echuca provides a unique opportunity for visitors to experience an operating steam port.

Steamers on the move

Visit what was once the centre of Australia’s inland trade. Paddle steamers would bring wool from as far as Queensland for transport to Melbourne, where much of the wool would be exported to London. Today, you’ll find as many as a dozen steamers moored along the riverbank, and you can journey on board one of the port’s three fully restored paddle steamers that still ply the river.

Shipwrights and craftsmen

Head to the wharf where you can chat to shipwrights as they continue to restore the fleet, ride in a horse-drawn carriage, watch craftsmen turning red gum, or re-trace the port’s history at the Echuca Historical Museum. For a dash of intrigue, visit the Star Hotel, which features an underground bar and escape tunnel.

Welcome to paddleboat heartland. Hop aboard a steamer or holiday on a houseboat, surrendering to the river’s charms in the vibrant, heritage town of Echuca-Moama.

History and reinvention at the port

Taking its name from the Aboriginal word meaning ‘meeting of the water’, Echuca-Moama is one of Victoria’s oldest river towns was once the state’s most substantial inland river port.

Head to the restored old port area for a lesson in local history and an exciting opportunity to experience a working steam port. Take a seat on an authentic paddle steamer and imagine the bustling riverine trade routes of old, when steamers would travel almost as far as the Queensland border, bringing cargoes of wool to Echuca-Moama for transport to the Port of Melbourne.

Or enjoy a leisurely one hour stroll on a self-guided tour of the Echuca Wharf, where many original buildings remain intact, creating a delightful streetscape.

Holiday on the water

Make Echuca-Moama your base for a high-energy, water-based holiday. Its location right on the Murray River, its warm Mediterranean climate and myriad water-based activities, including water-skiing, swimming and boating, make for endless family fun.
